Despite a recent and sudden attachment to Japanese roasted green tea I am, at heart, a coffee-kind-of-girl. Unsweetened soy latte with a generous dash of cinnamon is my poison and i usually take mine at home or at the Coffee Company on the Vismarkt in Utrecht: familiar and friendly faces and I feel quite at home amongst the other worker bees pretending to get loads of work done while retaining that cool vibe.
That said, Utrecht has so many other coffee places at the moment it seems a shame not to check out some of them. And thus i ventured, in the midst of a shopping spree with my eldest, to 30ml in the Mariastraat.
It isn’t really that small at all but small enough for us for us to casually strew about plastic shopping bags while trying to reach that one table near the wall. A little too casually as it seemed: it prompted the bearded barista to sternly ask, and rightly so, “Could you please remove that plastic bag leaning against the artwork on the wall?”.
Oops.
Missed that.
After that little mishap we felt obliged to not just order a coffee and coke but also a croissant and a dark chocolate cookie. Eldest fell in love with the organic coke (and sneakily stole the bottle) and his cookie got the “Oooh yes baby” thumbs up. The coffee was very nice. I just keep wishing baristas would give unsweetened soy milk a chance. I use it at home and it is just so much better than the sweetened varieties.
As it was a Saturday the place seemed to attract its fair share of random shoppers passing by. I am sure on weekdays there will be regulars hanging out which would give it a more relaxed feel. And ‘relaxed’ is the keyword for me when it comes to combining coffee and work so for sure…i will return.
