Hairy

The other night I met up with my friend for drinks and a film (Birdman and by the way: go see! Excellent film.) and as she looked around the café she sort of squinted to see if it was indeed me sitting at the table and said ‘I didn’t recognize you at first, you have your hair down!’. Indeed I had and it is a rare sight.

It was not how I came in though, it was braided, but on the bike ride over there I just got soaked through (that is another funny thing, every time I meet up with my friend it rains, without fail), water literally dripping from the top of my head. So I let my hair down in the restroom. And when I say ‘let my hair down’ it actually looked as if I had let my hair down at some wild party somewhere right before because my hair dries up in one big curly mess and I start to resemble some wild child stuck in the seventies. But with a face of a woman in her forties. And that night not even in fancy clothes but in boyfriend jeans and bikerboots.

I digress.

Once my hair was more or less dry I put it up in a bun, annoyed as I always get with all that loose hair getting in my face. But it did get me all worked up again about my hair situation, as you will. Because ever since seeing this photo I had already started longing for a neater do.

Which I know perfectly well is just not feasible with my kind of hair. ‘Neat’ comes in 2 flavours for me: braided or bun. I’d have to spend ages getting it to look like that photo using all sorts of tools and hair products and all with the knowledge the second I step outside it will be gone with the first gush of wind. Too much effort and frustration really and quite frankly I have better things to do with my time.

Another option would be to cut it all off and go with a pixie cut. Now, I have had a pixie cut for years, I used to be ‘that girl with the really short hair’. And it is so easy and wonderful to get out of bed knowing you don’t have to do too much to look presentable hair-wise. But I know deep down it just is not me anymore. For this phase of my life long hair suits me better.

I have tried in the past asking my hairdresser for a cut that would enable me to wear my hair loose without it driving me crazy and having me swipe about my face with my hands all day long but I always get that hesitant look and a ‘You know, I really would not know that, it is curly AND fine and I don’t think this will work.’.

For now I have decided not to look at specific cuts anymore but more at ways to style.

And maybe get a new hairdresser.

I am that friend and I am not that kind of girl that gets jealous……….BUT!!! Sevi’s hair is, when loose so damn sexy and beautiful and everything I’ve always wished for….sigh…
Why are we, women, like this..we want the hair of that model..but her visit at the hairdresser lasted for many hours and once outside her hair will also collapse. And she wished she had hair like Sevi…
