Confession time: I adore hotels. I just can’t help it, that feeling I get of letting go of my every day buzz the minute I step into a hotel lobby is priceless to me. The pampering by friendly staff, interior design which perhaps I would never want to see in my own home but still appeals to me in a big way in hotel rooms, little unexpected luxuries in bathrooms and even the white fluffy bathrobe: all of it I can get or already have at my own home but it all just feels different and better in a hotel. And don’t get me started on room service or breakfast!
Discovering little oases in towns nearby or far away is a hobby of mine even. I could spend hours searching for the perfect getaway, leave it to me to find just the right place. Stockholm for example has been on my travel wishlist for some time now and the list of hotels I’d like to stay in has gotten te be rather impressive. Although I like the bigger chain hotels too, I almost always go for the boutique hotel: smaller, with a more individual feel to it and in most cases a very personal approach from owners and staff.
And as it turns out, my hometown of Utrecht has just such a hotel: Mary K hotel.
Situated on picturesque Oudegracht in an 18th century canal house, I know its surroundings all too well: step out the front door and you are right smack in the middle of downtown Utrecht with all of its lovely amenities within walking distance.
Mary K blends comfort with design, all from local designers and artists may I add, and as such qualifies as a real Utrecht gem. All the rooms are designed individually with quirky touches. It has a light and airy breakfast area and make sure to check out the vaulted cellar and their art work!
Utrecht is not big on boutique hotels so if you are planning a stay in Utrecht, make sure you put this one on your list. And for a look at their ‘naughty’ side, check out this cool film.
