En pointe

Tonight I get to cross off an item on my bucketlist: I am going to the ballet. Swanlake to be precise, as performed by our very own Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam. I get to go with a dear old friend (and yes, I will retract the ‘old’ part if he ever gets to read this) with a dinner beforehand so I am up for a full night of entertainment and very much looking forward to it.

I was never the ballerina you see. I swam and later on I played volleyball. Dancing never really came up while growing up, much like having long hair, wearing make-up or drooling over horses. Still, I watched in silent admiration whenever there was ballet on television, observing those slender limbs and languid movements. Elegance personified.

To my mind then, when one goes to see the ballet, one dresses for the occasion. Right? Right. Or not so right. Many years ago I showed up to go to the opera for my very first time (with the same friend actually) wearing a full-length flowing skirt of several layers of tulle. Teamed with an edgy leather jacket yes, but still…overdressed all the way from here to Timbuktu. I will not make that same mistake again, thank you very much.

Bearing in mind also I will be sitting down for nearly 3 hours, anything too tight and/or revealing will leave me cold and uncomfortable. As it is my wish to enjoy this experience to the fullest I will adjust my outfit choices accordingly. Knowing myself this will be a rushed decision taken in the last half hour before I have to leave the house but there you go.

That said, no compromises in the shoe-department. I have a reputation to uphold: high and sexy. So if not so much en pointe, sure thing I will be on point.
